The Synthesis of Lightness. Meet The Airpad From Interstuhl.

The Airpad Chair manufactured by leading German seating company Interstuhl brings a whole new dimension to mesh back seating options. With its gossamer thin back section almost appearing transparent at times this chair really combines the best of both aesthetics and practicality.

The Airpad has been around for a couple of years now, but we thought we would help you understand what the functions it can offer and the benefits that they bring. Sitting in the AirPad is as simple as falling back softly into an automatically adjusted, ideally balanced sitting position. Below I have outlined the features of the Airpad chair.

Backrest

The backrest is constructed of a transparent mesh membrane and what this means is ensures the user’s body is kept at an ideal temperature and prevents the build-up of heat. The backrest as a whole is also height adjustable and is controlled by a simple snap locking mechanism. Therefore there is no need for a bulky lever. This ensures the chair is suitable for all users, short and tall.

Seat

The seat pad is upholstered with a 50mm fabric cover which is fastened with a drawstring, meaning there is no need for adhesives. By not using glue to hold the cover down, an optimum microclimate is given meaning the seat is breathable adding to the Airpad’s light aesthetic.

The seat is height adjustable from 415 to 535mm by using an independent safety pneumatic spring. This little feature makes a big difference as it allows users who are out of the DIN range (taller than 184cm and smaller than 151 cm) to have the correct ergonomic seating posture.

The bounce spring under the seat is what allows the user to softly fall back into the chair. This works by absorbing the impact in its spring cushions and taking any initial strain off the spine.

The seat can also be inclined and have its depth adjusted. The front edge of the seat can be tilted by up to -4° and what this does is place the pelvis into a steeper position. The benefit of this is that it causes the user to keep their spine straight, therefore avoiding an arched back. The seat depth works by twisting a lever located at the front of the seat pad and increasing the overall depth of the seat itself. This ensures that the correct amount of support to the thighs is provided for taller users.

Mechanism

The Airpad uses a Body-Float synchronous mechanism with a maximum opening angle of 125°. Interstuhl’s Body-Float mechanism has been crafted to ensure that the user’s body is provided with maximum support in all seated positions. It does this whilst at the same time smoothing the switch between different postural positions. The Airpad is also weight adjustable from 45 to 140kg.

Lumbar

The Airpad comes with an option to have a horizontal adjustable lumbar support which is integrated into the backrest mesh. The actual depth of the lumbar is increased/ decreased with an air pressurised pump and can be positioned in two different positions. This allows the Airpad to be adjusted with ease for different users and gives an individual support to the spine.

Armrests

The Airpad has the option to have armrests and as a UK standard they offer 2 variations, both 2D and 4D. Armrests allow the user to rest their arms meaning no strain is placed on their neck or shoulder joints. The 4D armrest offer height, width, depth, and pivoting adjustment. The 2D armrests offer both height and width adjustment.

The height is adjustable by pressing the button under the pad and raising or lowering it dependent on the need (adjustable by 100mm in 10 different positions). The width is adjusted by simply pushing or pulling to the required width (adjustable by 25mm in 3 positions on both sides). To adjust the depth of the 4D arms you just have to push or pull the armpad (adjustable by 50mm in 6 different positions). The rotating function simply requires you to twist the pads to the desired angle (each side +/- 15°).
