Embrace Nature With Algue From Vitra

The Algue screen system from Vitra was designed by the Bouroullec brothers, who sum up the project as an approach to architecture from the millimetre.

Since Ronan and Erwan started to design their inspirational furniture pieces, they have always focused on creating larger furniture pieces which create separate rooms within rooms. The brothers have always had a diverse interest in systems which are modular by design which are often composed of puzzle-like room dividers in a variety of materials.

Back in 2004 they wanted to try something different. They went in the direction of taking one smaller design and repeating it on a larger scale. They first created a curtain formed of twigs, which was shortly followed by the creation of Algues.

The Algue screen system is both a brilliant interior design solution as well as a beautiful decorative piece. As the name suggests, the Algues take the form of plants. Each Algue unit is made from one injection-moulded stick which has five branches coming off it. Each piece also has nineteen points of connection allowing for a variety of layouts. Each plastic element can be linked together to form web like arrangements, from light and airy to solid and dense room dividers.

The Algues come in packages of 25 units which form a light mesh screen of approx. 1 square meter, and are available in seven different colours.

Fun Fact: Contrary to popular belief, the name of the Algues was conceived of after the units were made!
